Damn. Double damn. Yeah, I'm with you all the way on this one. Cogent analysis backed by good personal narrative. I started in mental health as a volunteer counselor for street people in Portland, OR (OutsideInn Clinic - still in operation, I think). Community Mental Health in this country is a bit of an ongoing nightmare, as I came to discover. People (the average voter) just don't get it about mental health, and the average mental health professional is a damn poor advocate. This really is not good for me to think about too much - it starts to compromise my own mental health. To right myself, I find that I have to write. Righting through writing (heh heh). See, I'm feeling better already. Time to plot another op-ed piece, if I can find the time. Carry on.
